Apparently there is some sort of world sportsball* event going on at the moment. I really don't care because, well, fuck that noise.
What I realised was that I hadn't heard about it at all, which got me thinking about why I hadn't heard about it. I normally go out of my way to avoid all news about the most boring sport in the world, but it somehow always managed to force its way into my life anyhow. Avoiding it becomes a bit more difficult during these larger events as people think I'm suddenly interested in it.
So what's different this time around?
I think it all ties into the fact that I have heavily reduced my social media usage over the last few months. I haven't logged into Twitter for years, but since the beginning of the year I haven't used Reddit, Instagram, or Facebook.
The only social media I go near are LinkedIn (at least once a week to re-post articles) and Mastodon. I don't follow anyone on Mastodon that ever talks about sportsball, so I guess it's just a case of my current "bubble" being devoid of the subject.
Speaking of bubbles, I have been really enjoying the blog aggregator bubbles.town recently. It's a blog aggregator for personal blogs that you can vote on articles that interest you. I have just found it really pleasing to go back to basics and just read posts from people about what interests them.
Some random, interesting posts I have read recently are:
- Britain's Greatest Eccentrics: The Bizarre, the Brilliant, and the Completely Unhinged
- I'm So Tired of Ads
- Don't Roll Your Own ...
- Gmail Thinks I'm Stupid, So I Left
- PSA for web designers: flags have ratios!
I'm absolutely loving the content people are writing here. Instead of opening up some random social media site, I will instead open up Bubbles and read the first handful of articles that interest me. I think reading long-form things is doing my attention span some good, after years of abuse from short-form content.
* Ok. Yes. I mean football. I hate that sport.
